BCS Foundation Certificate in Data Protection

BCS Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection 

As many of our courses are delivered online we cover the whole of the UK. We can offer in house and online training for your business or organisation. Subject to availability we can also offer in person face-to-face training.

All in house training usually incurs a day rate and a cost per person attending the course. We do offer some courses on package deals. You can either check out our Bundles or get in contact with an enquiry.

This depends on the course you purchase. The minimum access is two months for our essentials collection courses, up to 1 year for our longer courses. Please check the individual product pages for further details.

Yes!  We regularly review all of our course content to ensure it reflects current legislation and case law, as well as any changing views or advice from regulators.

Some of our courses have syllabi that are produced by awarding bodies, and the content will be updated each time a syllabus changes.

When the BCS issues a new syllabus, work begins immediately on updating all relevant course materials. The previous syllabus and associated assessment will remain available for a period of time with the BCS, usually 5 – 6 months after a new syllabus is introduced, meaning you will not have to repeat any content if you have almost completed your online learning materials unless you want to sit the assessment associated with the new syllabus.

Tkm releases their updated materials as soon as they are available, which is usually no more than 3 months after the release of a new syllabus, although it does depend upon the level of change required.

If you have already ordered your online on demand package, you will be given notice of when we are going to issue updates as part of our monthly updates.  Changes are usually made as detailed below:

• Within the Tkm client hub (the client portal), digital materials relating to the previous syllabus will remain available in an archive folder, which will be accessible until the BCS withdraws the associated assessment.
• New digital versions of materials will be made available in the client hub at the same time as the previous materials are placed in an archive folder.
• The content in the learning management system (LMS) will be updated.  Previous versions of recordings will not be available, although where a topic is removed from a new syllabus, any associated recordings will be available in an additional module that will be made available to you until the BCS assessment is withdrawn.

There is no need for you to repeat any of the modules you have already completed in the LMS, unless you want to sit the assessment for the new syllabus.  We will issue a list of changes made to the content in the LMS so that, if you’d like to sit the assessment for the new syllabus, you know which materials you need to revisit.
You will not be issued with an updated set of hard copy materials, although you will be able to access all the new materials through the client hub and you will be able to print these materials if you wish to.

If you were issued with the previous version of course materials and complete your learning materials while the previous assessment is still available, we will confirm with you which version of the assessment you’d like to complete when you submit your registration form.  Once the previous version is withdrawn, we will automatically register you for new version.  There is usually no material difference in the qualification you will receive when versions change unless we advise you otherwise.

We will provide regular reminders in emails about final dates for sitting particular versions of assessments, although please contact us at any time if you need further information about this.

All planned changes to content and timings of those changes will be communicated in the monthly email.

Please note that if you order your online on demand course within 10 working days of a planned update to the LMS, you will receive the updated version of the materials.

Once you purchase one of our online on demand courses we will be in touch with instructions for accessing our learning management system, called Training Post. From there you can access your pre-recorded course content and resources. 

There is no option to download our training videos to your device(s). You must watch these when you are connected to the internet and logged into our learning management system. You can however download the digital course materials and resources.

For the majority of our courses there is no minimum number of attendees. Please contact us to discuss this further.

Yes, although this depends on the course as, where it is certificated, the course we deliver must cover everything in the syllabus. We would urge you to contact us directly and let us know what your trainings goals are.

No. You will retain access to the learning management system for the specific period for that course. Check the inidivual product page to find out more as access can range from two months up to one year.

Yes, we offer a monthly subscription service to content after your initial access period expires.  Please see our product pages for current rates.

Yes. We offer organisational licences to our LMS and assign you with specific courses. From there you become responsible for adding your own attendees.

We are unable to provide transcripts of our recorded content on the LMS.

We currently use Webex or MS Teams to deliver our online attended live training. You can access both via the browser or download the app. Users tend to find Webex to have better functionality if accessed via the app.

You will be emailed a calendar invite prior to the course commencement date which will include a link to join the live training sessions.

On average we have 6-8 people attend our live attended courses. We cap our course capacity at 8 because we like to keep our training as interactive as possible and allow everyone the opprotnity to ask questions and collaborate where they feel comfortable. Very occasionally, we may have up to 10 attend our online courses. 

We have had great feedback about our smaller course sizes and find this works best for our customers.

Where you are attneding live online training we will send you your materials approximately a week prior to the course commencement date. Where you have booked an on demand course and wish to recieeve hardcopy materials, we will send these as soon as we receieve payment. Please allow up to three working days between payement and shipping.

For most of our attended courses you will be given access to our client hub for one year. Here you will find your digital course materials, the latest news, our own newsletter and information on upcoming courses.  

Those completing online on demand courses will also get access to the client hub which has a digital version of materials required for each course as well as other resources.

The cost of registration with the BCS and the cost associated with your exam is included in our course cost.

You need to complete the registration form we provide at the end of your training and Tkm will register you with the BCS.  You will then receive a confirmation email and receive instructions for choosing a date and time for your exam.

The examination is carried out online and will be invigilated by someone from the BCS via video conferencing.  Please note that the remote proctoring provided by the BCS has some very specific requirements for your PC and we strongly recommend you watch the videos available in the client hub.

Where you have an SQA exam to undertake as part of a course offered by Tkm Consulting you will liase with your course tutor to choose a data and time for your exam. This will take place online and one of our team will invigilate your exam.

Your certificate(s) will not expire, however this is not to say that you shouldn’t be keeping your knowledge up to date, and particularly your CPD (continuous professional development). This is very improtant for those working in the information governance field including those who are Data Protection Officers or Records Managers.

BCS certified courses focus solely on the data protection legislation within the United Kingdom.  SQA qualifications have a more practical focus and include sessions on information governance.

You can collect badges to keep a record of your own CPD, or use them to display on your socials. If you have recently completed one of our courses and would like a badge, please get in contact.  

Certificates of completion for our essentials courses are available from within the learning management system.

You don’t need any qualification or complete any specific course to become a Data Protection Officer in the UK although the legislation refers to “expert knowledge of data protection law and practices”. 

The knowledge you need is likely to depend upon the organisation you are working in.  A good starting point would be either the Certificate in Managing Data Protection Compliance or the BCS Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection.

Tkm offers data protection qualifications that are approved and certificated by the SQA and BCS qualifications.  The key difference between the two is that the SQA approved qualifications have a more practical focus and include sessions on information governance compared to the BCS qualifications that focus solely on UK data protection legislation.

The BCS Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection is 5 days long, usually delivered online over 2 weeks with some content available in our learning management system. 

We recommend you sit your assessment approximately 4 weeks after the course has been delivered.  The BCS Foundation Certificate in Data Protection is 3 days.

Yes, the prices of Tkm’s courses all include any assessments as well as course materials.  For the BCS Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection, the price also includes a one-to-one revision session.

In the UK, there is no standard or recognised certification specifically for a Data Protection Officer (DPO).  Tkm offers a number of certificated data protection qualifications although these do not certify you as a DPO.

Tkm offers a range of data protection courses, some of which are qualifications and certificated.  Others are recognised by our badge scheme.  We also offer data protection training that is customised for your organisation if you are looking for in house training.

We offer two BCS courses in data protection. 

The BCS Foundation Certificate in Data Protection is 3 days long and is suitable for those looking for a basic understanding in the key areas of data protection legislation.  The BCS Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection is 5 days long and suitable for those who are in the role of Data Protection Officer (DPO) or are responsible for advising organisations on data protection related matters.

Tkm currently offers all data protection training online.  Face to face sessions are available for in house sessions

Data protection qualifications offered by Tkm do not expire although it is important to keep your knowledge up to date and regularly participate in continuous professional development (CPD) activities, particularly if you are a Data Protection Officer (DPO) as there is a legal requirement to maintain your knowledge.  Tkm offers courses in assessing and managing risk for data protection, conducting data protection impact assessments, and auditing data protection compliance.  We also have a range of information governance courses that are suitable for DPO CPD including the BCS Foundation Certificate in Information Security Management Principles.
